Course Overview
This exciting and practical one-day introductory course has been designed to address the needs of people keen to use Containerization (Docker and Podman in particular). The course concentrates on giving both newcomers - and those who want to brush-up their knowledge - a hands-on introduction to containerization and its ecosystem. Participants will spend the day discovering the benefits that it offers both sysadmins and developers who will also learn to set up, manage and use Containers.

This one-day course runs on the same courseware as our full DOCKER-CORE masterclass, taught by the same instructors. We cover the same ground in a single day by staying at the level you need to start working, rather than by using different, simpler material. If the day leaves you wanting the layer beneath, that layer genuinely exists and you can come back for it.

How is this different from the 3-day Masterclass?
One day buys you breadth rather than depth. You meet containers, images, registries, networking and volumes, and leave able to work with them. DOCKER-CORE takes the same material considerably further, into Linux namespaces, capabilities, the overlay2 filesystem, multi-stage builds, Compose, Podman pods and real troubleshooting.
Which of the three container courses should we book?
This one for a single-day introduction or a refresher. DOCKER-4K8S if your containers only ever run on Kubernetes, since it drops what the cluster handles for you and spends the time on depth instead. DOCKER-CORE if you run containers standalone and want the full picture.
Do we use Docker or Podman?
Either. Every command is presented in both forms, so you can follow along with whichever matches your environment. The underlying concepts are identical.
What are the prerequisites?
None beyond general familiarity with software development. Basic Linux skills help, but no prior container knowledge is assumed.
Do I need to install anything on my laptop?
No. Every student gets their own pre-configured cloud machine, so all you need locally is an SSH client (already present on Linux, macOS and Windows). Work in the editors installed on the machine (vim, LazyVim, Emacs) or connect your own with VS Code Remote Development or IntelliJ's SSH remote development. Login details are emailed a week before the course.
